Random thoughts on the SaaS business
Back in 2006 I thought running a SaaS business would be easy. You build the software, market it online and drive people to the site and then sit back and earn the juicy recurring income. This sounded so much more interesting than the on-premise model. Don’t get me wrong, it still does today - I don’t see myself doing anything else besides running a SaaS business. Though, it’s much more complicated than just driving traffic and siting back with a martini. Here are some of my random thoughts on the SaaS business…
- Extreme commitment for the long term.
- Most people suffer from feature-itis.
- Adding new features in not directly proportionate to revenue.
- Try to measure everything but then use your gut in the end.
- Get managed hosting. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Hosting is
- not the core business.
- Social media is just an awareness building tool. Use it wisely.
- Your product is never completed.
- Manage UI/UX well and you will be almost home.
- Build a business and not a feature.
- Trying to keep everyone happy doesn’t work.
- There are tons of apps that compete with your app. Finding the USP of your product is paramount.
